"Belief about Last Prophet"

Belief in the finality of Prophethood, which means that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the last prophet and no prophet will come after him, is a key belief in Islam. Denying this belief is like rejecting the Quran. Not believing in this means declaring that the belief of every Muslim, from the time of the Holy Prophet ﷺ until today, is false.

What Quran Says about Last Prophet ﷺ

The Quran clearly states:

مَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ اَبَاۤ اَحَدٍ مِّنْ رِّجَالِكُمْ وَ لٰـكِنْ رَّسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ وَ خَاتَمَ النَّبِیّٖنَؕ-وَ كَانَ اللّٰهُ بِكُلِّ شَیْءٍ عَلِیْمًا (40)

“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of all the Prophets.”
[Surah Al-Ahzaab, Ayah 40 – Kanz-ul-Iman (translation of Quran)]

[Kanz-ul-Iman (translation of Quran)](Part. 22, Surah Al-Ahzaab, Ayah 40)

This verse is very clear and leaves no room for any other meaning. Allah sent Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after all the previous prophets and messengers and ended Prophethood with him. From the time of the Holy Prophet ﷺ until the Day of Judgment, no one will be made a prophet.

This belief is essential in Islam. Anyone who denies it or even doubts it is considered a disbeliever and cursed.

Explanation from Scholars

Shaykh ‘Alwaan Ni’matullah Bin Mahmood (d. 920 AH) in his Tafseer Al-Fawatih Al-Ilahiyyah says:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent by Allah to guide all people. Just like the prophets before him, he was sent to show the right path. However, his special status is that he is the final Prophet and Messenger. After him, Prophethood was closed, and the message was completed.”

Words from the Last Prophet ﷺ and the Quran

The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:

“I have been sent to complete good character.”

Allah also said in the Quran, marking the completion of the religion:

“Today, I have perfected for you your religion.”
[Surah Al-Maa`idah, Verse 3 – Kanz-ul-Iman (translation of Quran)]

This shows the importance of believing that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet, a belief that every Muslim holds.
